Chapter One — The First Breath Taken

The genuine first printed page from the published novel

The maternity ward always smelled like someone had tried to scrub grief out of the air.

Antiseptic—sharp enough to sting the inside of the nose—layered over warm plastic and the faint copper bite of blood that never truly left, no matter how many times the floors were mopped. The ventilation pushed recycled air through ceiling vents with a soft, constant sigh, as if the building itself was practicing calm.

Mara had learned not to trust that sound.

She walked the corridor on quiet soles, her badge tapping lightly against her sternum with each step. Behind the glass of the nurses’ station, monitors blinked steady green and blue, lines rising and falling in clean rhythms that pretended life was simple.

In her pocket, her fingers found the familiar crease of a folded paper she never unfolded anymore.

Not now. Not here. Never under these lights.

She paused outside Room 6B when the intercom chimed—two short tones, then a voice clipped with urgency softened into practiced reassurance.

“Delivery complete. Neonatal team requested.”

Before opening File 02

The discovery was only the beginning.

Part I asked what would happen if a human lifespan could be measured and breath could be transferred. Part II steps behind that miracle and follows the people forced to confront what every transfer truly costs.

File 02 // The human consequence

Somebody remembers the first lie.

The Breath Essence Extractor has changed what it means to save a life. But behind the promise, every transferred breath must come from somewhere—and the people controlling the machine are learning how useful that truth can become.

Mara was there when the first lie was told. Her story draws the reader closer to the people living beneath the system: the hidden cost of each transfer, the first stirrings of resistance and the choices made when saving one person may quietly spend another.

The system can hide a cost.
The ledger cannot.

Part II shifts the Breathless world away from the clean promise of invention and into improvised rooms, copied files and dangerous questions. Decode the transmission to hear what the official record leaves out.

A note from Ian O'Dowd

After the miracle.

Part I begins with the possibility of transferring breath. Part II was where I wanted to turn that possibility around and look at the people behind the numbers—the lives affected when a medical breakthrough becomes a system, a currency and a source of power.

Independent fiction. No manufactured reviews or invented awards—just the story, the world and a clear reading order so you know exactly where this book belongs.
